Even the most caring have their breaking points
|

Both myself and my wife are nurses and have worked as nurses for over 10 years. It is a sad and hard time for all. However, if poor countries like Cuba can still provide one of the best health services in the world then there is something seriously wrong with this picture. My wife has always been one of the most inspirational people in my life on a personal level but also from a professional level. She is one of the most caring people I know. She cares about what she does and how people are treated. One of the most imporatant attributes of a competent nurse is that they are caring. I have recently seen her spirit squashed and destroyed by the heartless and uncaring devices of the health service. She now seeks job opportunities outside of nursing as she has been stretched, like so many other nurses out there, to breaking point. I know my wife better than anyone, and if she has reached this point, all I can say is God help the sick and vulnerable because the health service is going to lose so many good nurses who have given up the fight and just want out. A good friend of mine was horrified by this revelation claiming that my wife should stay and fight, as the loss of good nurses is the last thing the health service needs now. The HSE think they can hold a dagger over the heads of their employees because of economic constraints on families. Well let me tell you, you can only push people so far before they walk away. To some this may seem like the easy option. This is one of the hardest decisions my wife has ever had to make. She was born to care for others, but there is only so much a person can do with caring if the resources and staffing levels are not there to meet the demands. What can we do, nothing it appears . They will win in the end because we have fought and fought and we have gotten nowhere. Just like so many, its all words on a page. It is a sad day when the health service falls apart at the seems, it is infinitely worse when we start to lose good caring nurses. This is personally and professionally a very sad day for me.
